Just as with a jazz ensemble, it's not just what and how we perform that matters, it's how our audience perceives our performance. The leader must recognize and appreciate the abilities and willingness (or lack of either or both) of our audience (or our followers). This is not to say that we must always give them only what they want; in fact, to be successful, we must offer them--and, sometimes, get them to accept--what they need.
